I am writing this blog because in my near future as of 2016 I am planning on becoming a great clinical nursing instructor. This blog is created for informational purposes and for ideas on completing this goal. Tips are welcome such as: getting the scoop from other CNIs, getting the word out there for my plan, being creative and being myself
Maybe you can add a post about networking and job opportunities. People can post about jobs they know off?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Sarah Bowes
of not off....
DeleteThank you and I will do that. I now have a better idea of what is expected.
DeleteAdriane,
DeleteGreat idea for a blog! Its a wonderful idea on sharing educational strategies.
Or they can share tips on how to get a CNI job. Helpful information that will make you stand out to hiring institutions.
DeleteAdriane,
ReplyDeleteI can see where a blog could be very useful for networking. I too hope to be working at least part time in academia. I often wonder what the best way to break into that arena would be. I would be interested in being a Coach for a BSN program, but I am not sure how to even start the process.
Good luck to you!
Dawn
Dawn,
DeleteI was contacted by a nursing instructor that I knew from working together on the floor. Now that she is an instructor she is utilizing me as a mentor for BSN clinical for some of her students. It has been very rewarding and I get to look at new graduates as potential new employees!! I would contact who ever arranges for the clinical experiences with the nursing schools and network through them.
Dawn,
DeleteI also am hoping to be able to mentor and lead in a program such as a coach in a BSN program. I also would be interested in developing a bridge program with the AP schools with students that need training in the local hospitals. Late one night, I was searching for information on- line about UTA and the coaching position and came across an article that was written about a contract agency that hires the instructors (coaches) and they then are contracted to different colleges. Unfortunately I did not keep the article. Food for thought.
I also think networking and using friends and coworkers are a great resource. I am currently an adjunct faculty for a LVN program as a clinical staff and I was able to accomplish this via someone I knew. I ask questions all the time to inquire on how to start a process and its expectations then I learn to take off.
DeleteGreat start to your blog. I appreciate your ideas for blogging your goals, and dreams for your future. This idea is unique and individual, best of luck to you and your future endeavors.
ReplyDeleteKristen Donaghue
By making your dreams known they have more of a life and can come true. Maybe that one person will read what you wrote. You never know.
DeleteI work with two RN's who are full time nursing instructors in ADN programs at local community colleges (one is tenure track, the other is tenured). They work part-time in the radiology department to keep up their clinical skills and to stay current with the nursing world. They tell me you never really leave the bedside. They also give me helpful hints as they know academia is my ultimate goal. One way to start teaching is by becoming a clinical instructor. Once you are "in" you are more likely to hear about available classroom positions that may be opening up. They both say it is the best way to be at the right place at the right time.
ReplyDeleteAdriane,
ReplyDeleteI think you are on the right track with your blog. This blog may appeal to nursing students as well. I know I didn't have a master plan on what area I wanted to work in when I graduated. Good luck on your blog!
I think this is a great topic! I have also thought about being a clinical nursing instructor at one point in my career so would find a blog like this useful in helping me make that decision. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI agree, I also want to be a CNI in the future and I hope I can experience that opportunity. This would be a nice site to visit to get ideas on how to pursue those dreams. I hope Adriane keeps the website going after the class has ended. It will be a nice resource for information.
DeleteAdrianne,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great site for us to share our fears, expectations, and goals in regards to becoming clinical educators. I look forward to your future postings.
Kelly, it helps to know that we experience the same emotions regarding our efforts and our future. Too often, we don't talk about the things that we feel and mountains are made from molehills. Having this assignment and knowing that there is a site we can come to when we need reassurance can potentially make a big difference in how we approach our future goals.
DeleteKelly,
DeleteI agree with that this could be a great site for sharing fears and expectations for clinical educators. I look forward to seeing if this site continues to grow.
Adrianne,
ReplyDeleteI think this blog will be great as a resource tool to help nurses who need to know what steps to take to get into the academic world especially if they have been in bedside nursing.
Leticia
Great Idea! We could all use a resource such as this as we complete our degrees and take our next journey into furthering our career as nurse educators.
DeleteHi Adriane,
ReplyDeleteGreat topic!!
I think since we are approaching graduation time, this has been weighting heavy on my mind. I work in a teaching facility, with a heavy traffic of nursing schools. I've taken the opportunity to talk with various clinical instructors to further inquire about their role and get their personal insight. It amazes me how much all of them love what they do and how welcoming and enthusiastic they are about (eve when describing their "bad days).
Best of lucks to you. Seriously consider pursing it, if this is what you really want.
Nilfy,
DeleteThanks for sharing. I have started inquiring on educational positions that may be opening in the near future. I found out today from my supervisor that they may have a position for me. Weighing the possibilities.
Hi Adriane,
ReplyDeleteGood job on your blog. Good luck on your career as a nurse educator. If you use linked in or another professional networking site maybe you could add a link to your blog. Then prespective employers could see your passion for education and your thoughts on becoming an educator as you continue your process through grad school.
Kaylan
Kaylan,
DeleteThat's a great idea to link to her blog on linked in or another professional website. I would just use caution in regards to what you write, since a potential employer could view this information. Thanks!
Julie
Julie, I agree with you about being cautious about blogging content. It is sometimes easy to forget that with the social media blitz in today's society, employers have a glimpse into our private lives. Pictures and comments can be taken out of perspective, even those of random commenters. I would recommend having some sort of preview option, if possible, for authors of blogs so they can decide if a particular comment is appropriate before allowing it to be public.
DeleteThank you
DeleteGood idea for a blog. Seeking advice from other nurses that have already been practicing in a given role is always a great way to gain confidence in a new position. Even though we are getting an excellent education in our Master's program, getting the "inside scoop" from someone who has already been practicing is invaluable. Good luck with your career goals!
ReplyDeleteLea Anne,
DeleteI agree that this is a great idea for new educators. It is a great way to decrease anxiety. It also provides networking and ideas for others to share.
Sharon
This is a unique take on the blogs created for this class. You are utilizing the assignment to advance YOUR knowledge and to provide support to yourself and others perusing the same path.
ReplyDeleteI agree it's an interesting choice. If the blog were to continue, maybe questions could be posed each week where readers could come to share their experiences, both good and bad. That would be a great way to gain insight into the practice of being an educator.
DeleteAdriane, what a great blog topic! This is a great way for you and anyone else who reads your BlogSpot to gain helpful insight from those who are experienced in this area. No one gives as great advice as those who have traveled the road before you! It is great to have a forum where you--and everyone else who needs it--can gain information regarding everything from warnings of pitfalls to the circumstances that make it all worthwhile! Good luck in all of your endeavors!
ReplyDeleteAdriane,
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with everyone that you have selected a unique way of learning and gaining information on being an educator. Imagine nurses from different hospitals giving you their do's and don'ts on education.. Nice work!
I would love an education blog with input from nurses from all over the country and world.
DeleteThe setup is simple and easy to read. It could use some more posts or updates and I think once you get an idea of where you may be headed with this blog, it may have quite the audience of followers. Good luck and I look forward to seeing this again soon.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy teaching as much as I do. I started my teaching career at a local for profit college. They did not require a MSN in order to teach, so it has allowed me to get some experience teaching while I continue to work on my MSN in nursing education. Good Luck.
ReplyDeleteSheila I think it is great that you are pursuing an MSN even though it is not required. I have been a little nervous about being a classroom instructor. I cannot wait to see what the future has to hold.
DeleteHi Adriane,
ReplyDeleteI think you are off to a good start. Networking seminars or webcasts are also great resources to help you develop into a CNI. I have always wanted to teach, and now that online classes are increasing, the thought of teaching and traveling has increased my desire to complete my degree so I can work and have fun at the same time.
I think that your blog has an excellent topic. It might work well to post particular questions about being a nursing instructor, so that people can respond with their ideas and experiences. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI agree Victoria that it might be beneficial to post specific questions related to this topic. It would be a great way to start a great conversation about becoming a nursing instructor
DeleteThis could be an interesting site for new educators to find out information about being an educator as well as a place to share experiences. I have been a staff educator for over a year now and still have questions, or question myself. Sharing of experiences is a way to help others grow.
ReplyDeleteI agree Bryan, I think sharing other experiences can assist in looking into the whole picture. Also this will aid in getting insite on the positive and weakness of this profession.
DeleteI like this topic as new clinical instructors need a place to go to get information and support. With the shortage a instructors, we need to get all the support possible.
ReplyDeleteLeanne,
DeleteI agree that there is great support in numbers. A blog such as this can foster team work with ideas, visitor experiences and a oneness that cannot be found in any other format.

Adriane,
ReplyDeleteLee (2013) stated that there are six components to consider when creating a blog: context, audience, purpose, channel, noise, and feedback. Intended messages that participants send to each other should be clear. These messages could be distorted due to participants’ beliefs, feeling, and attitudes. According to Lee (2013), “Evidence-based writing calls for a clear and credible presentation of the writer’s claims and evidence to the target audience” (p. 246). Do you think your presentation was credible and clear? I do!
Gunelius (n. d.) stated that orange, although not often used, could evoke feelings of excitement and fun. Yellow has been shown to evoke feelings of positivity and warmth. White has been shown to evoke a sense of purity and cleanliness. Do you feel that your choice of color reflected the meaning of the content?
Culbertson (2011) stated that an effective blog has content that is compelling and causes the reader to take action in some way. Do you think that your blog will cause the reader to take action?
I also plan on becoming a clinical instructor and continue to work part time at the hospital. I am not sure about becoming a classroom instructor, something about that is scary. Thank you for your post.

Adriane,
ReplyDeleteI think you are off to a good start. Your background and complementing colors go together well and are appealing to the eye. Nurse Educators have a great responsibility to educate new nurses on the ways that make them great nurses. To do so it literally takes a village. One can gather strength in numbers and what a great way to gather ideas from one another than a blog. This format allows the sharing of thoughts and ideas and can be a sounding board when you need to let out stress. Good luck in your future as a nurse educator.

Adriane,
ReplyDeleteMaybe topic for your blog might be strengths and weaknesses -- or just strengths. Is there any one disease process or management skill that you could consider yourself expert? Or certified? Or have a passion? For example, diabetes, lactation (helping mothers learn to breastfeed), mental health, trauma, pediatrics? Nursing has such a vast array of fields and opportunity. I am keyed in on mental health. If I were an employer, I would not be the first candidate choice if they were looking for someone with strengths in pediatrics, but I would hope I would be their first choice in depression or grieving or bipolar. However, there is much more to being a clinical nurse instructor than just one area of nursing. Good luck in your career!
Adrianne,
ReplyDeleteI like your blog. Perhaps you can add specific information such as networking, new job opportunities, questions and answers, and positive quotes.
Sharon
This blog seems as if it would be great for networking.
